Award-winning GMA Sparkle Actress and Save the Children Philippines Ambassador Barbie Forteza has donated P100,000 to support children and families affected by the devastating earthquake that struck Northern Cebu on September 30.
The 6.9-magnitude earthquake has affected more than 170,000 people, with children reported among those dead and injured. Thousands of families remain displaced, with many individuals exposed to the elements as heavy rains continue to batter communities.
“Children are the most vulnerable in disasters like this. Based on Save the Children’s assessments, many children are still deeply afraid, especially with the continuous aftershocks. It is also heartbreaking to see photos of children sleeping inside plastic bags because of the heavy rains,” said Forteza.
“That’s why we must make sure children have safe spaces, food, clean water, and the chance to continue their education even during emergencies.”
Save the Children Philippines’ team is on the ground, working with partners to distribute food, water, and hygiene kits to families. The organization is also preparing to establish temporary learning spaces so children can continue their education, and to provide psychosocial support to help them cope with trauma.
Forteza’s donation will help fund these life-saving interventions, especially for children who lost their homes and schools.
“Children have the right to protection and education, even in the most difficult circumstances. I hope more people will come together to support the children of Northern Cebu, because they deserve to feel safe, cared for, and hopeful again,” Forteza added.
